Sundown (X-Pac Version)

Sundown (X-Pac Version)

from CA$356.00

The Sundown was born from a desire for an ultralight backpack that could do it all. A pack that would excel on long trails, comfortably carry loads for a range of trip lengths, and transform into a daypack for summit trips or everyday use. The Sundown is the result. Weighing in at roughly 1.7 pounds, the Sundown is light, sleek, and versatile. Featuring a removable hipbelt and aluminum frame, as well as volume reduction capabilities, this pack can morph to fit any occasion with ease. For quick access storage, hip belt and shoulder strap pockets are available separately.

All Northern Ultralight gear is proudly made in our small scale workshop in Nelson, BC, Canada.

In-stock backpacks will ship within 1 week.

This version of the Sundown has limited availability, and will not be restocked. If your required torso sizing is not available, please place an order through our primary Sundown product page.

*We recently started constructing our Sundown backpack with a modular top compression system: allowing you to switch between using a single or Y-style top compression strap, depending on your use case. Some of these in-stock Sundowns have our original sewn-in top compression straps and are being offered at a discounted rate, while the in-stock modular style packs are available at our normal retail price. The modular Sundown backpacks that are available on this product page are made using our original X-Pac fabric variants, as opposed to our new ECOPAK fabric variants. The particular fabrics used on both variants are very similar in terms of weight, performance, and durability. The primary difference being that X-Pac has a nylon face fabric compared to ECOPAK’s recycled polyester face fabric.

Add pack to your cart to select your hipbelt size.

*Please note that all additional storage options, such as hipbelt pockets, shoulder strap pouches, modular y-strap, and/or bottom cordage, must be added to your cart separately when purchasing an in-stock Sundown. Explore additional storage and accessories here.

Tech Specs & Sizing

  • Here is an in-depth sizing video with instructions for taking your required measurements. See below for sizing charts.

    Torso Sizing

Pack sizing is based on torso length and not height. If you are in between sizes, we recommend sizing up.

    Small: 14.5"-17"

    Medium: 17"-19.5"

    Large: 19.5"-22"

    Tall: 22"-24.5"

    Hipbelt Sizing

Hipbelt sizes are based on waist measurements. Measure your waist where it is most narrow, above your hips, or wherever you would like your hipbelt to sit. We recommend erring on the larger size when choosing a belt, so more padding will wrap around your waist. However, make sure your waist measurement is no smaller than the minimum circumference listed.

X-Small: recommended for waists between 25"-28.75" (length of padded portion: 22.75”; adjustable range 25”-35”)

Small: recommended for waists between 28.75"-31.75" (length of padded portion: 25.75”; adjustable range 28”-38”)

Medium: recommended for waists between 31.75"-34.75" (length of padded portion: 28.75”; adjustable range 31”-41”)

Large: recommended for waists between 34.75"-37.75" (length of padded portion: 31.75”; adjustable range 34”-44”)

X-Large: recommended for waists between 37.75"-47" (length of padded portion: 34.75”; adjustable range 37”-47”)

  • Main body: X-Pac VX21 — 3 layer fabric: 210 denier nylon face fabric with polyester reinforcement grid, laminated to a waterproof PET barrier and 50 denier inner polyester backing

Side pockets, straps, and hipbelt: 210D HDPE Gridstop — 210 denier nylon with a gridstop pattern comprised of high-strength HDPE fibers

Front pocket: Heavy duty mesh — comprised of a nylon and lycra blend

Bottom and back panel: X-Pac VX42 — 3 layer fabric: robust 420 denier nylon face fabric with polyester reinforcement grid, laminated to a waterproof PET barrier and 50 denier inner polyester backing

Frame system: Two removable aluminum stays with a layer of 1/4” foam padding sewn-in along the back panel

*The X-Pac fabrics we use are waterproof up to 200 psi, however due to small holes at seam locations, we recommend using a pack liner to ensure your gear stays dry in the event of heavy rain. A simple and effective pack liner is included with purchase of the Sundown.
